More and more details are emerging about the violation that caused Kevin Quick to be booted from the Michigan hockey team. Both the St. Pete Times and the Buffalo News have the story today that he stole a credit card and charged thousands of dollars to it. Errr....allegedly.
Add this information to the fact that a guy like Mitera said that their friendship won't continue because of the situation, Red's comment that he completely violated the trust of the team, and that he's been de-friended by most of the hockey team on Facebook (isn't that the ultimate eff you by the way?) and it's not all that hard to figure out what happened.
By all accounts, he's a good kid. Someone from Boltprospects, I believe, said that out of every prospect in the organization this was the last kid they expected to have a problem like this. Sometimes people do stupid things. And then sometimes people do really, really stupid things. There might have to be a new category created for this action.
I really don't understand how someone could be that stupid, or how he thought he could ever get away with it. But he's paid the price with his right to attend the University of Michigan and play on the hockey team. He's going to have a legal issue because I'm pretty confident that credit card fraud is a federal crime and a felony to boot. He lost a slew of guys who would've been life-long friends. He lost a chance to play for a team that has a good shot to win a National Championship. He's got 2 1/2 strikes against him with his NHL team. He retarded his development, since I'm pretty sure the AHL isn't the place for a kid who is a half season removed from the prep ranks. And he embarrassed himself in front of his family as well as pretty much everyone who follows college hockey, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Norfolk Admirals, or was keeping an eye on the local kid making good.
Quick's actions were extremely disappointing (seriously, who does that?) and he owes an apology to his teammates, the individual involved, the university, whoever endowed the scholarship he was on, the coaching staff, the Lightning, as well as the Michigan fans, because he damaged this team's chances of going all the way if the Wolverines have a defenseman go down. He was given a great opportunity and he completely threw it away. For his own sake, I hope he's able to put this behind him, learn from his mistakes, and get his life back together. People generally deserve second chances, even if they do really ****ing stupid things. Hopefully he makes the most of his.
And now that the story is finally out, we can move on and talk about the players that weren't dumb enough to get kicked off a contender.
Edit: I also guess that it also deserves mention that there are two sides to every story and we've only heard one. It's pretty clear that Quick did something stupid that's going to cause him some legal trouble in the future. He's admitted that in the article I linked a couple days ago. But I'm sure we'll hear his side in the future.
Also, one bit of non-Quick information, KC8NIY has put up a torrent of the Michigan/Miami (registration required) game from last night. It's well worth watching if you haven't seen it. Great hockey game, and the way that Matt Shegos and Kevin Langseth can completely stuff up a game is truly a sight to behold.

Happens much more often than you think and sadly, very few get caught. Interestingly enough, I am surprised he got caught, that was the stupid part.
Why do people insist on public apologies all the time for stuff like this? Obviously he's an idiot. We already know he did something stupid, and HE already knows he did something stupid; neither party needs an apology to acknowledge the fact.
reminiscent of kevin gaines...
That's exactly it, he made a mistake and is getting his life back together so let him and stop throwing it in his face...do you really have nothing better to do?
A very reputable source told me that the stolen credit card was that of teammate Carl Hagelin, while he was away in Prague competing in the World Junior Championships. Apparently he intended for it to be a "joke" and intended to pay Carl back, but obviously Red and the rest of the team didn't see it that way.
@anonymous #2) You're right. This isn't news at all, especially since the official cause was just reported. He dug his own grave on this one...this incident is going to follow him for a long time. I don't know why you'd expect it to go by here without comment.
I wish the kid well. By all accounts he's a good guy and everyone's shocked about the situation. He just made a stunningly stupid mistake.
@anonymous #3) Someone posted that on The Fort earlier today too (maybe it was you?). I'd like to hope and believe that's true because he comes across a lot better that way. That doesn't really jive with what I've heard though, not to say it couldn't have gone down the way you heard it.
I have hard a hard time buying that it blew up this big if it was an honest joke and he was just like "I got you. Here's x thousand bucks to pay for everything." Definitely not a very good joke if that IS the case.
Hopefully all he's really guilty of is a faulty sense of humor. I'd LOVE to find out that that's true.
IMO, provided the money gets paid back, he's paid enough for this error based on what I outlined in the article.
I will say that he's lucky that the Lightning/Admirals have been as understanding as it seems they're being.

Yes, I suppose I'm a masochist at times.

Don't worry, it's homespun arrogance playing to the crowd. Exposed a few USCHOers for what they really are, if you ask me.
I say give them the trophy now, and take down our banners whle yer at it.
Quick should be expected to pay this charge card back. That has not been made clear by the parties involved. Most likely he will be bailed out by his agent, Tampa Bay or Norfolk so he won't be responsible for the debt incurred. If that happens, Quick will learn that, because he is an athlete, he can do whatever and someone will bail him out. That is sad.
kevin is my cousin (although i've only met him once) and he seemed like a really nice guy to me. he messed up. it was a REALLY stupid mistake. his older sister is really nice. she teaches at my school. i'm sure he regrets all of this. let him go on with his life, we all make stupid mistakes. just because he's in the public eye doesn't mean we should hold it against him his whole life.
I also know the family real well Kevin is a great kid he is very young and I can say without hesitation that this only happened because his parents are complete low lives and he didnt know any better. He was following thier no good example and he has learned his lesson.
I played with him at a New York state tryout before he went to Salisbury and he seemed like a very nice guy. I also went to a prep school and stuff like that happens there all the time, I could see him getting the idea there, that is of course under the assumption that he was guilty of what he was accused of.
i know kevin quick personally. he lives about 15 minutes away from me and i know for a fact that he has changed and matured since this incident. do i think that he was wrong by doing this? yes, but i think hes made a change for the better since then.
I know this is old news, but calling his parents low lives is unacceptable. Do you know how many kids his dad opens doors for? He gets many kids to the college or pro level every year. That family cares about every single kid out on that ice. Stop talking crap or eat a used condom
