VOTE SHAWN HUNWICK FOR HOBEY!!! Here's the link. It literally takes 2 seconds.
AJ Treais and Lee Moffie were named CCHA offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for their performances against NMU. Treais had 1-3--4, including the game-winner in OT on Saturday. Moffie also had 1-3--4 on the weekend. It's kind of funny that the Defensive Player of the Week award tends to be given based on offensive stats, but whatever. Congrats to them both!
Matt Slovin from The Michigan Daily covered Shawn Hunwick's Hobey chances. Chris Peters gives his take on Hunwick's chances from more of a national perspective. I'd agree that the chances aren't great. Only two goalies in history have won the award and Hunwick's numbers aren't nearly as good as Ryan Miller's were. That said, Peters is right, you'd be hard-pressed to find a player that is more important to his team. He needs to at least be a finalist. He's clearly the top goaltender in the country and the field should be wide-open this year. I'll break it down more once the finalists are announced. Call me conference-ist, but man I don't care about Austin Smith. Like, at all.
The Daily also covered the defensive-zone turnover problems and AJ Treais's metamorphosis into a sniper.
MHNet has the weekly recruiting update and a chat with Evan Allen.
Bob Miller from College Hockey PROSPECTive has a profile of JT Compher.

More Links, Cos There's Nothing Else Going On
MHNet says the Alumni Game will be July 31 this year.
Nice article from The Arizona Republic about the Michigan connection with the Phoenix Coyotes. Porter, Kolarik, Montoya, Summers, Chris Brown. There are a lot of really great quotes in the story, both from the Coyotes and the Michigan players. Phoenix GM Don Maloney said that he would be "stunned" if Brown spent four years in college.
Maloney also said that Summers "will be with us at the end of the year, for sure".
Jed Ortmeyer and Dwight Helminen both signed one year contracts with the San Jose Sharks. They're the latest Michigan teammates to become reunited. Brendan Morrison and Mike Knuble both signed with the Washington Capitals.
More praise for Mac Bennett. CTV called him the biggest surprise of Habs camp, citing his poise despite being as young as he is. Montreal's Director of Player Development said that he looks like he had been to two or three of those camps.

More Links
A couple more features involving Mac Bennett: A take on the changing landscape in youth sports and a really good story about the Bennett family hockey legacy.
Culver's is sponsoring the Camp Randall Hockey Classic. There have been 20,000 tickets sold, but Mike Eaves is still convinced there will be 80,000 in attendance. I guess I just need to make more friends!
3 of ESPN's top ten NHL free agent signings are former Wolverines.
JMFJ and Mike Komisarek made the 34 man roster for the USA Hockey Olympic Orientation Camp. It'd be fun to see the two of them playing together in Vancouver next year.
Matt Hunwick filed for arbitration with the Bruins.

Timbits
There's really nothing going on right now. Given the way Michigan's summers normally go, I suppose that's a good thing, but it's definitely slow around these parts. A few timbits (because I miss Tim Horton's):
-2010 verbal Derek Deblois had his USHL rights traded from Tri-City to Cedar Rapids. If he ends up playing for them, that could be a potential road trip destination next year when the U-18s are playing there. Yes, I did just throw out the idea of taking a road trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
-Youth hockey in Texas is taking off. Contains quotes from Chris Brown and a Jacob Fallon mention.
-Here's another article about Brown that I'm pretty sure I linked, but just in case I didn't.....
-Stats weren't easy to come by for the prep school kids. NHL.com's draft page has Bennett's stats as 2-9--11 with 10 PIMs in 15 games and Deblois's stats as 10-21--31 and 16 PIMs in 23 games.
-Need a gag gift for your favorite FYS hockey fan?
-MHNet found a clip about Kevin Lynch.
You stay classy, Anaheim. What I'd like to know is how could anyone actually swing a chair in the Red Wings' press box? The Ducks' GM claims that it was "a complete accident". It was also a complete accident that Cory Perry wouldn't attempt to fight anyone taller than 5'10". And Scott Niedermayer accidentally elbowed Pavel Datsyuk. Pronger's hits from behind? All accidental.
I've never been entirely sure how I feel about teams using Native American mascots. It doesn't bother me, but then, I'm also not Native American so far be it for me to decide if it should be offensive to them or not. I do know that it makes me sad that North Dakota might have to give up their nickname/logo. They've got a lot of tradition with that name, they've quite possibly got the second-best-looking jerseys in college hockey, and it's a classic logo.
They might come up with a new name that doesn't sound stupid (they used to be the Flickertails....probably not going back to that) but nothing will sound right. The suggestions that they become the Soo, Sue, or Sault make me laugh, but realistically they aren't going to do that. I kind of like the idea of not coming up with a new nickname. Just be the University of North Dakota.
-Mike Kemp stepped down as UNO's hockey coach to take a job in their athletic department. He sure didn't put the kabosh on the idea they might end up in the WCHA.
-It sure doesn't sound like the Michigan/FYS Cold War record will be broken by the Camp Randall Hockey Classic. As of last week, only 16,000 tickets had been sold. I bought 1/5 of a percent of those.

Calgary, you're welcome. Sincerely, The Michigan Wolverines
To recap, Calgary has tied up their series with Chicago at two games apiece.
They've scored 13 goals in the four games, not counting the one empty-netter. Of those, six have been scored by Wolverine players. David Moss leads the team with 3 tallies.
Eric Nystrom had the game-winning goal and two assists tonight to lead them to a 6-4 win. Last game--a 4-2 Flames win--Eric Nystrom scored the first goal and David Moss sealed the game with a pair of third-period goals.
So yeah, Calgary, you're welcome.
Other stuff:
USA Hockey had an article about Kevin Clare, who is taking advantage of his increased ice time due to a couple of dmen getting called up to U18s.
Michigan's power play this year was the worst it's been since 1984-85. Ouch.
Matt Hunwick had his spleen removed but hasn't been ruled out of the playoffs just yet. They said on XM that he's out of the hospital.
The Port Huron Times-Herald had an article about JMFC.

Catching Up
Stuff you've no doubt read elsewhere, but I'll mention/comment on just in case:
-Aaron Palushaj is gone. No shocker there, he signed with the Blues Thursday night. From the sound of it, the Blues didn't put a lot of pressure on him and let him pretty much make up his own mind. He wanted to leave, so he did. It's frustrating to see another star player bail, but it's not like this should have surprised anyone. I think we pretty much knew from the middle of his freshman year that he wasn't going to be a four-year guy. It would've been nice to get three out of him, but I wish him well at the next level and I have no doubts that he'll be another addition to the list of Wolverines in the NHL before too long.
-Speaking of additions to the list of Wolverines in the NHL, Al Montoya's NHL career has gotten off a pretty good start. He shut out the Avalanche in his first outing and then allowed just one goal in game #2, both wins for the Coyotes. He finally got properly inducted to the NHL in game #3 when the Kings scored 6 on 32 shots. Still, Montoya is giving the Coyotes something to think about for next season. It's nice to see him finally get his shot, and it was even nicer to hear the compliments paid to him after his second start.
-Chris Summers was officially named the captain of the 09-10 Wolverines. Cappy won team MVP and Summers was named Best Defenseman. Billy Sauer was named the Best Team Player, which was well-deserved. He handled this season like a champ.
-The Wolverine now has an official blog run by Ace from The Ace of Sports, which is no more. One of the first articles was an interview with Mike Spath about the 08-09 hockey season.
-Timmy Miller signed with the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL. Travis Turnbull ended up with the Portland Pirates of the AHL, on a two-way contract with the Buffalo Sabres.
-The Oakville Blades won Game 7 against the Wellington Dukes to advance to the OJHL Finals. Lindsay Sparks had an assist in the game to extend his scoring streak to 10 playoff games. They are taking on the Kingston Voyageurs and trail the series 2-0 after a 5-4 overtime loss and a 4-3 defeat. Sparks has been held off the scoresheet in both Finals games.
-Lee Moffie and the Waterloo Blackhawks will take on the USHL Regular Season Champion Green Bay Gamblers in the first round of the playoffs. The best of five series will begin in Green Bay on Thursday.
-The USA Under 18 Team is in Fargo for the World U18 Championships. Jack Campbell and Jon Merrill are on the roster as well. The Americans downed Germany 9-0 in their opening exhibition game. AJ Treais had a goal and Chris Brown had a goal and an assist.
USA won their other exhibition tilt 4-3 over Sweden. It was a pretty darn good night for future Wolverines. Chris Brown assisted on the first goal. AJ Treais assisted on the second goal. Kevin Lynch scored the third goal. Jon Merrill scored the fourth goal. Jack Campbell made 33 saves in the victory.

Hockey Links!
I may not have a lot of content, but I sure do have a bunch of interesting links to pass along!
HSR and MGoBlog break down the PWR rankings and comment on how the screw-jobs against OSU and ND might come into play.
Brian takes a look at people who are better at their jobs than Kevin Langseth is at his. I would include my Dish Network installer on that list. Douche.
The Ann Arbor News gives us some fantastic news: Mark Mitera is expected to play this weekend against Ferris State. Talk about a boost heading into the postseason. It'll be interesting to see how the team handles the "letter" situation. I gotta believe Mitera and Summers both wear C's.
Also, according to the Ann Arbor News, Piotrowski said the the officials determined that it was Vaughan's skate that created the contact with the puck. Clearly that was the wrong decision being that the goal has been credited to Severyn and OSU's official site even says the puck went in off Severyn's skate. Great group you got there, Pio.
MHNet's take on Saturday's game made me laugh. Very fitting, and a commercial that I always thought was funny.
WCH weighs in as well. I'm not sure I completely agree that all goals off skates should be allowed to count--I don't think you really want to encourage guys to start trying to kick the puck--but I 100% believe that unless there's a distinct kicking motion, the goal should count. If you're skilled enough to turn your skate and deflect it in, more power to you. It's really not that hard to figure out if a guy kicked the puck. Especially if you let them look at more than one replay that may or may not even have the puck in the frame when it's propelled toward the net. I can't say I remember ever being pissed at the NHL over a call when the puck was kicked into the net. They might be good at screwing things up when the goalie is pushed into the goal. They might not be able to get calls in the crease correct (especially when we play Anaheim). But I don't remember ever complaining too much about kicked pucks. Then again, the NCAA refs are incompetent enough that even with what essentially amounts to a no-tolerance policy on goals going in off the skate, they're still getting it wrong at an alarming rate, so maybe we shouldn't be putting trust in them to get judgement calls correct.
Dwight Helminen was involved in a scary incident over the weekend. The Albany River Rats' bus crashed, sending several team members/employees to the hospital. Ex SCSU Huskie Casey Borer broke his neck (thankfully it sounds like he'll be able to resume his career) and told his story to the Times Union. He was sleeping and woke up while he was flying through the air. Borer said Helminen was cut up in the crash. It doesn't sound like Dewey was seriously hurt though. Thank God everyone was (relatively) okay.
Jeff Lerg is about to become the all-time save king in NCAA hockey. With the way they inflate his shot totals at Munn, I'm shocked this didn't happen by his sophomore season. Regardless, congrats to him. At least something good has come out of the fact that his team can't play defense.
Last, but certainly not least, Mike Spath talked with Red Berenson about the calls Saturday night and Red is more than slightly upset about it.
Spath said he'll post some quotes in the near future. That should be a really good read.
Some people might view it as sour grapes, but I'm glad Red is speaking out about this stuff. The more attention drawn to what jokes the officials and the replay system are, the better the chance that something will be done about it. The conference deserves all the negative pub it gets for this one. In Michigan games alone, their officials have inexcusably stuffed up four goal calls in the last month. With the benefit of video review, albeit a flawed video review system. This goes so far and beyond missing blatant penalties, or failing to DQ someone for an attack that would eventually get him kicked off his team. These are calls directly awarding goals scored by illegal means and disallowing perfectly legit goals. It's happening way too often. It's cost Michigan two games against Teams Under Consideration and it needs to be fixed. I don't want to hear about a $50,000 replay system. All it takes is a freaking cable TV jack, a cable TV subscription, a coax cable, and a TV for the officials to get a better view than what they've got now. Hell, I don't even have that in my condo right now and I still had a better view of Severyn's kick in than what the officials apparently saw. I had a laptop, an internet connection, a Slingbox, and more than half a brain--unlike the numskulls working the game.
Edit: Oh, I meant to pass this along awhile ago. A reader wrote in with the details of what must be the ultimate place to get your Michigan jersey personalized. The hockey team gets their jerseys made at Exclusive Pro Sports in Rockford, IL and they'll do jerseys for fans as well. They've got a huge database of the lettering styles and colors. And I guess it's only like $65 plus postage to get it done (and that was for 3-colored numbers).
Also, if anyone has a team photo from this year that would be suitable for printing into a decent size (I'd guess at least 8 x 10) could you let me know? A reader wrote in looking for one. All I could find online was a tiny one from the GLI.
Edit #2: Also, Andy Baggot reported a few days ago that "All signs continue to point to the Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team hosting Michigan in an outdoor game at Camp Randall Stadium in February of 2010." The announcement has been pushed back to March, but they don't anticipate anything jeopardizing the game. Nice to hear, since it seemed like this game fell off the face of the earth. Tickets are reported to be around $15 for the game. Bargain.

He also took about five minutes to rip the hell out of the replay system and the CCHA officials. He's very aware of what the two games (ND and OSU) could end up costing his team in the long run. But while he wants to see wholesale changes to the replay system he doesn't know that it will change because enough programs (ones that don't get TV often) probably wouldn't benefit from introducing new technology.

I Love Red
He's absolutely pissed about the way that game Saturday night went down, and who can blame him? This isn't quite, "Brian Aaron needs a big red nose and floppy feet" but it's close.
The Wolverine has had lots of good stuff from Coach Berenson and the CCHA the last couple of days. Here are some choice words about the waived off goal at the end of the game:
On the explanation given to Berenson during the game: "He told me on the ice the net was off. The net didn’t even budge. The net didn’t even shake. It’s a bad call. They know it. They’re going to hear about it from the league. It’s too bad. Whether or not those officials were good enough to handle that series is a question but that’s a league situation. And the league is very good about it. [Head of officiating] Steve Piotrowski is very good about discussing it but we can’t turn it around."
There's a lot of other good stuff from Red in that post, including the fact that he clearly feels the kicked in goal was a blown call and that Brian Aaron really screwed up.
The day before, they had stuff from the CCHA. Basically both the calls were blown, but they're not overturning the game (not that anyone thought they would or should). The gist of it is that Brian Aaron is a complete fool.
CCHA sources admit that the neutral-zone referee should not have blown his whistle when he did, remarking "You have to trust your partner and the deep-zone referee, in this case, was in the proper position to make the call. You only act in that manner if your fellow official isn't in position, if he fell down or is racing down the ice." So essentially, the official on top of the play did not blow the whistle and was rendered useless when the neutral-zone referee blew the whistle prematurely.
Other stuff: As linked in the post below, it appears that Nick Cousins hasn't committed to Michigan after all, and may have, in fact, decided to be our Little Brother. If true, hopefully he works out as well as Leveille has. And if it turns out he's maize and blue after all, hopefully he's Gretzky part 2 :)
WOLV-TV has a great view of the Maday goal. My favorite part is how every Wolverine player on the ice immediately reacts about the puck being kicked in. Pretty unlucky that five or six Wolverines saw it get kicked in, but the four blind mice didn't. MGoBlog weighs in as well.
Most of my content this weekend will be over at MGoBlog. Brian is taking a well-earned vacation and is turning the keys to the kingdom over to various Michigan bloggers for the week. The LSSU post-game wrap-ups will be over there and the guys from Hoover Street Rag invited me to participate in their Cover It Live broadcast of Friday night's game (which will also be at MGoBlog). Ten Things will still be here.
Mitera's recovery is coming along, and he still is shooting to get back for at least one more game at Yost. He's been skating with the forwards in practice so he can get in some more puck touches. I'm really excited that it looks like we'll get to see #17 back on the ice in a Michigan jersey. I'm sure this isn't how he pictured his senior year, but I think they're going to be in the mix to send him out in style.

Articles of Interest
Don't look now, folks, but we're a mere 2 1/2 weeks away from Michigan's exhibition games and 3 1/2 weeks away from dropping the puck for real!
That paper I don't really link to anymore had a really good article about 2010 commit Luke Moffatt. MHNet has the link if you'd like to read it. (Thanks to Kenny for giving me the heads up about that article.) The whole Moffatt family packed up and moved to Ann Arbor when Luke started playing for Compuware so it sounds like he's solid as a rock about going the college hockey route. Nice to hear.
Freshman numbers are out! Greg Pateryn will be wearing #2. Brandon Burlon gets Matt Hunwick's #6. Luke Glendening will wear 23. David Wohlberg is #25. Robbie Czarnik will be #27. Here's something that I think is news: Glendening is on scholarship. And Greg Pateryn has officially taken the "Freshman who looks closer to 35 years old than 18" title from Greg Oden.
The USA Under 18 team kicked off their season with a 5-4 ot win over the USHL's Indiana Ice over at The Cube. Kevin Lynch scored and Chris Brown had a pair of assists. Brett Bennett, formerly of the NTDP and Boston University, was in net for the Ice.
Max Pacioretty is expecting to play in Hamilton this year. Le sigh.
Lee Moffie may be moving to the USHL for this season. He's one of 27 players listed on the Waterloo Blackhawks roster at the moment, and they'll be carrying 24 into the season. Apparently the coach wants to get a look at the guys on the bubble in the preseason before making a final decision on the roster. There are 9 defensemen listed on the roster, but I believe only two of them are returning from last year.

And Now For Something Completely Different
Part Two of the postseason report card for the forwards isn't done yet,but here are a few Michigan-relevant things from around the internet (and maybe a couple that aren't related to the Wolverines):
The finalists for the Selke Trophy have been announced and rest assured, the trophy will be going to a good home. The finalists are Pavel Datsyuk (who is a lock to win it, IMO), Henrik Zetterberg, and Michigan's John Madden.
A reader passed this along: The NHL has released their final rankings for the upcoming draft. Burlon, Czarnik, Pateryn, and Wohlberg all made the list. Burlon is ranked 41st amongst North American skaters, Czarnik is 88th, Pateryn is 146th and Wohlberg is 172nd. At the midterm, they were 57th, 116th, 162nd, and 189th respectively, so the draft stock of all four of our incoming freshmen has gone up.
Edit: Bob Miller pointed out that 2009 commit Lee Moffie is also on the list as the 181st ranked North American skater.
San Antonio lost Game 4 to the Toronto Marlies, so the best-of-seven series is now even at 2. Neither Porter nor Kolarik managed a point in the loss.
Edit: They also lost Game 5 2-1. Kolarik had an assist. They're now down 3-2 in the series.
Blog Posts That I Liked and Haven't Linked Yet:
Genuinely Sarcastic, a glaring omission from the Blogroll which has since been corrected, posted a slew of Red Wings/Avs videos from Youtube which got me all fired up for our second round series with the Avs.
Hoover Street Rag had a recap of their trip to Denver, which sounded only slightly better than our drive out there. I'm a big fan that the next few Frozen Fours are very doable: DC (next year) and Tampa (2012) usually have cheap flights and the Detroit and St. Paul Frozen Fours in 2010 and 2011 are very, very drivable.
SpliceToday had an article about the Michigan/Notre Dame game which reflected on "the pain of relevance". It pondered the question: Is it better to be a high-profile program, knowing that if you lose to, say, Appalachian State, you're never going to hear the end of it, or a fan of a team that is largely irrelevant in the eyes of the world? I'm with the author, taking crap from people after a loss isn't fun, but it would be a lot less fun to not be mentioned at all. Apart from The Horror, in which case I would much prefer toiling in obscurity. It was a pretty good read.
Other Stuff:
Note: The following is not an advertisement.
CentSports (affiliate link....if you'd prefer not to use that one, click here) might be my new favorite website. Basically it's a sports betting site that uses advertiser money to pay for wagers. Since the bettor isn't putting up any money, it's apparently legal. They give you 10 cents to sign up and if you ever go "bust" then you get another 10 cents so you can get started again. Once you get $20 you have the ability to cash out. There are a few people listed who have won a couple hundred dollars. You probably won't get rich doing it, but it's kind of a fun, stress-free way to gamble on sporting events. It certainly made the Rockets game last night more interesting, even though I only won like 65 cents. Try it, it's fun. And if you hit a few bets in a row, the amounts of money might end up paying for lunch or something. Plus, if you use the affiliate link above, I get a bonus of 5% of the bets you win (they don't take money from you, it's a bonus for me)....so use that one and win me a few pennies!
Also, WDFN has partnered with some sites around the blogosphere in an effort to give the fans a bigger voice and they asked if I would like to be a part of it. I've been listening to that station since it first came on the air (I miss Damon "The Dog" Perry), so it was flattering to hear that they like my site and will be adding a link to TBTYB on their Michigan page shortly. I've added a link to the sidebar and will be trying to give a heads up when they've got Michigan content I think you might enjoy

Berenson Wins NCAA Coach of the Year
The post-season accolades keep rolling in. It was announced today that Red Berenson won the Spencer Penrose Award as NCAA Coach of the Year in college hockey. It's the first time Berenson has won the award in his career, though he was named NHL Coach of the Year in 1981.
Other stuff going on:
Chad Kolarik and Kevin Porter have both signed contracts with the Phoenix Coyotes and will join the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL as they begin their playoff run tomorrow. Ex-Michigan goalie Al Montoya may be between the pipes for San Antonio as well. He's been splitting time, so we'll see if he gets the start or not.
I nabbed a copy of this at the Frozen Four, but it's nice to see an online version: Letsplayhockey.com has compiled a list (PDF link) of every ex-college player to play in the NHL this season. There were 252 NCAA players that saw time in The Show this year. Michigan put the most players into the league, with 22. Wisconsin was next with 19, most of whom seem to play for Chicago. (HT: Western College Hockey for finding the link)
Red thinks a question at the Frozen Four press conference might have shaken Billy up. If that's really the case: 1) They need to get him to a sports psychologist ASAP; 2) You can decrease the chances that he ever plays in the NHL to 0%.
I don't remember where I saw the article, so I'm sorry for the lack of a link (I think it came from USCHO) but Billy had some very classy things to say after the game. He backed Red 100% on the decision to yank him and even said he thought it was a good move. I also loved Kolarik's quote about how he just thanked Hogan for giving the seniors a chance to possibly extend their careers. There will probably be a Coyotes jersey in my closet at some point, with either Porter or Kolarik on the back. If Chad makes the league, it's gonna be his.
Stuff from the Michigan Blogosphere about the loss to Notre Dame:
MVictors--agreed that it took some major stones for Hogan to play the way he did. I'm also with him about the third goal. I know at least one commenter said it was a great shot--and it was--but he had nowhere else to go with that puck. It's inexcusable to leave the short side open in that situation. Yes the Michigan defenseman (I believe it was Kampfer) got beat, but it was still an extremely low percentage chance and Billy just didn't cover his post.
Maize and Blog has the video of Porter's Hobey acceptance speech, including his hilarious slip up at the end. This wasn't "Sometimes the best team doesn't always win", but it was pretty great. The look on Porter's face when he realizes what he said? Priceless.
Maize n Brew sums things up pretty nicely with their headline. Good article as well.
MHNet wraps things up. I was feeling pretty good about the potential of a Summers return--truth be told, I actually didn't think there was a chance he'd leave--until I saw the quote in MHNet's article from the Coyotes GM. I'm more optimistic about our chances for next season. I realize there are a pair of huge holes (on-ice and off) with Kolarik and Porter gone, but we've got good players coming in, and we've got some excellent freshmen that have a year of experience.
MGoBlog takes a look ahead to next year and a look back at the loss to Notre Dame. No clue what the NCAA was thinking by the placement of the pep bands. It didn't make any sense whatsoever. I completely agree about how cool it was to see the jerseys from all around the college hockey world. My favorites: A UNH Mark Mowers jersey and a Mercyhurst jersey with "Hiscock" on the back. Make your own joke.
I enjoy seeing Brian's projected lines, since I'm terrible at doing them myself. We're still loaded at center, but I don't know who I'd put on the top line. Hagelin was amazing there when he got a chance. Rust was arguably our best player not named Kolarik against ND. Caporusso scored some huge goals and I think he is primed for a huge sophomore season.
As for the comments about the rest of the conference: I definitely think Northern Michigan will be in the mix for a bye in the first round next year. They are clearly the team with the best chance to crack the top 4. One thing about Miami: It's not even that their backup was Hogan to Zatkoff's Sauer last year, it's that he is gone too. So they'll be starting a freshman out of the NAHL next year.
On tap:
Going Upstairs on the Notre Dame game when I have the heart to do it (This depends on how much actually got recorded...I heard we had reception problems during the game)
A player-by-player review of the expectations I had, what they accomplished, and a grade for the season
Updates on all the commits
Before summer gets here and some people take a break from hockey, I would like to thank everyone who reads this site. Traffic doubled in the last quarter and I really appreciate everyone who has read/commented for their support. It really blew my mind how many people knew who I was this weekend. If anyone has any suggestions about things that they would like to see in the future or ways that I could improve existing features, leave a comment or shoot me an email. I'm definitely open to ideas.

Links!
Time for some links--some of which are new, and some which would've been included in the last Media Roundup had I not been in mourning for a good part of last week. Dammit Brett.
Anyway, you've probably seen half of these but they're still worth a post:
JMFJ has been concentrating on defense for much of the year but is slowly turning into the player he was in college. I still can't believe the Canes made that trade...
Drew Cogs has been under the radar due to Sam Gagner, but he's having a great rookie season. It's too bad the Wings never get a shot at a player like him in the first round. Oh wait...
Max Pacioretty was named to the CCHA All-Rookie team. Palushaj and Langlais were Honorable Mentions. Not a fan of Palushaj being left off, especially since four forwards made the team. When you lead the #1 team in the country in assists, chances are you should make the CCHA All-Rookie team. I'm just considering this practice for Porter getting jobbed out of the Hobey.
Mike Komisarek: The Toughest Man in the NHL (HT: MVictors) Ovechkin said that Komo will become one of the best players in the league. Lofty praise.
USA Today's stellar feature on Yost. I think those pictures of the arena, pre-hockey, are just awesome.
This is really old, but I just saw it. MGoBlue interviewed Pacioretty, Rust, Hagelin and Summers before the WJC. It's worth watching to see Summers's impression of Hagelin (and Hagelin's retaliation). Absolutely hilarious.
This might be my favorite link of the year: Eric Nystrom recreating the striptease from Slapshot. Here's the original if you need a refresher. He pretty much hit it dead on. (HT: PhatJoeSki at the Yost Post)
The ten Hobey Finalists were announced on March 15th last year, so they should be coming out in the very near future.

Slow Day
Nothing much is going on today, so today's update is going to be a short one.
Mike Spath and Bob Miller have updated the Hockey Hotboard to include some new players, along with comments from Bob about many of the guys.
Also over at the Yost Post, Maize Out said that there may be some good news on the recruiting front after this weekend. I'm sure he'll have it over at WCH if that's the case.
More stuff about the NHL Schedule: Apparently the Red Wings were proposing that the league go back to the 84 game schedule they used to have, and lower the number of preseason games. That would allow for every team to play every other team both home and away at least once. Gary Bettman put the kabosh on that, which is another reason he's a moron. When the Wings and Leafs are both behind a proposal, chances are it'd be good for the game. It's still nice to see the Wings taking the initiative on this, since the league isn't smart enough to do so.
Finally a couple of reminders for some charitable events that are going on right now:
-The U of M Memorabilia Auction to support the Pat Maloy Cancer Scholarship is going on right now. So far, they've raised over $20,000 based on the bids that are in. There's some really great stuff up for bid, including some cool hockey stuff. Also, if you happen to know any San Jose Sharks fans, there are a couple of signed jerseys which have pretty low bids right now. The team signed jersey hasn't been bid on yet, and opens at $200, which is pretty reasonable.
-Christy Hammond from Behind The Jersey is helping out with a campaign to get people to register as organ donors. They're having a competition with Ohio State to see who can get more people to sign up, and we're getting thrashed right now. One feature of the program is to provide red heart stickers for each would-be-donor's driver's license, which played a key role in Jason Ray's organs being donated. He was the UNC Mascot who was killed earlier this year. So if that's something you believe in, please help out the cause.

The Zoltan of the Michigan Blogosphere
The addition of links to the sidebar today was spurred by a very funny post from Maize n Brew, assigning a football player to many of the blogs in the Michigan Blogosphere. My humble site was said to be the blog equivalent of everyone's favorite punter:

ZOLTAN!
The explanation:
"How do you fit a mostly hockey blog into a football post? You make him a kicker! Hockey players and kickers are all ferriners anyway. Yost Built is not only your home for all Michigan hockey related gossip and analysis, but an excellent source of insight into the football program."
I appreciate the compliment, and the reasoning is very sound.
Anyway, I realized that I've been remiss in linking to some excellent Michigan blogs out there. So I added a new batch of links. Hopefully I haven't missed anyone. If I have, shoot me an email and let me know.
Another fun post that I stumbled across was Westsider Rider's current jersey list. I'm also a jersey collector. I don't have nearly as many, but I also--to this point--have only purchased jerseys of teams that I root for, and not necessarily individual players (or jerseys themselves) that I like. My list will be in a post to follow. I want to keep that on the sidebar along with my Sporting Event Counter.
I hope to make some more improvements to the site in the near future, including a new header to replace last year's Worst Year In Sports History banner (I resisted the urge to put up the Double Championship Countdown banner again this year, fearing a jinx). If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. There's a lot of blank space on the sides of this page, so revamping that would be something on the docket as well. If I can figure out how to do it.
